Artist's Description
This painting took much more effort than it appears. It started out as a soft pastel on Strathmore Artagain coal black, 60lb paper. But the pastels wouldn't quite stick, and smeared easily. I started adding detail with premium color pencils, but not all colors showed up as bright as the color I chose. Over several hours, I struggled back and forth, using workable fixative, and found that the surface now was less toothy, and adding pastel or pencil had little effect. I tried final fixative lightly, and that added a workable surface back, but obliterated the brightness of the pink and white flowers. I put it aside, frustrated, and watched a movie, during which a light bulb went off - oil pastels! I dug them out, and loved the effect with the pink flowers in the bush, but the white oil pastel, light the soft pastel and color pencils, refused to show up brightly. I was born with a love for the awesome beauty of nature, especially trees and the incredible variety of greens that paint canopies around the globe.
